Anesthesia for kids: is it toxic?

In late 2016, after several years of review, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Drug Safety Communication regarding all commonly used anesthetics that bind to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. The FDA warned that “repeated or lengthy use of general anesthetic and sedation drugs during surgeries or procedures in children younger than 3 years old or in pregnant women during their third trimester may affect the development of children’s brains.”
No specific medications have been shown to be safer than any other.
