Creuzfeldt-Jakob degenerative brain disease showing up in the elite
How did a pharma exec get kuru? Why did the CDC stop posting its death data?
AstraZeneca’s executive vice president of oncology R&D, José Baselga MD PhD, suddenly died in March at age 61. Yet only two years ago, Baselga was running AstraZeneca’s oncology R&D unit. Baselga died from sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob (sCJD) disease, a rare fatal spongiform encephalopathy that rapidly progresses into dementia and myoclonus once symptoms emerge. But the preclinical incubation period can last decades. Variant CJD is a related disease known as Mad Cow Disease, caused by ingesting contaminated beef. But sCJD is associated with ingestion or injection of human brain tissues.
In the ‘80’s, a case report series from the United States showed injected human growth hormone, extracted from cadaver pituitaries, could transmit CJD to humans. Later, injected human gonadotropin, sourced from cadavers, was added to that list of transmissible human tissues. Early theories hypothesized prions as the causative agent. When the sequencing of these peptide hormones allowed for bulk synthesis, this ending the need for human cadaver harvesting. No more cases emerged after the switch to exclusively synthetic sources for peptide hormones.
But neuropathologist Laura Manuelidis challenged the prion protein explanation in 2007. Her research group found virus-like particles in both naturally and experimentally infected animals. Hmmmm.
Kuru is known as “Laughing Death”. This is due to the pseudobulbar affect that results as the limbic system degenerates. It is a nervous system disorder that can make you laugh, cry, or become angry without being able to control when it occurs. It is characterized by sudden, intense fits that aren’t controlled; crying or laughter inappropriate for the situation; facial expressions incongruous with the emotions. These outbursts can happen several times a day, sometimes looking like a seizure.
When I looked into the most recent stats on incidence of the disease globally, I was surprised to see that it is rising steadily! Especially in the Boomer population. Sporadic CJD incidence increased from the years 1990-2018 in the UK. Probable or definite sCJD deaths also increased from the years 1996-2018 in twelve additional countries.
This trend in CJD-associated mortality and incidence rates was especially prominent in the older-age group, particularly in those over the age of 70 years. Although a previous report by the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease International Surveillance Network had stated that annual death rates of sCJD had risen in most participating countries in the past two decades, this study shows that Japan might have had higher CJD-associated deaths and incidence than other countries,
Curiously, the USA CDC stopped posting their data three years ago, in 2018. Why would that be? Especially with an incurable disease that is increasing in the population. Hmmm.
CELEBRITIES WHO DIED RECENTLY
In addition to the pharma exec, more notables died of this *rare* disease. In 2015, former speaker of the Utah House of Representatives Rebecca Lockhart died of the disease. In 2015 John Carroll, former editor of The Baltimore Sun and Los Angeles Times, died of CJD. American actress Barbara Tarbuck died of it in 2016.
And now, we see Kamala Harris and her bizarre laughing …
well, things that make you go hmmmmm.
