Calcitonin AFib and scarring with collagen
The hormone calcitonin was only thought to be produced by the thyroid gland, and certainly had no known effects on heart remoldeling after injury. Now, research reveals that cells in the cardiac atria produce ~ 16 times more calcitonin than the cells located in the thyroid gland. And a University of Oxford lab found that the hormone plays a vital role in reducing atrial scarring and subsequently, incidence of atrial fibrillation.
