It could be from exposure to loud heavy metal concerts, battlefield explosions and/or constant machinery, but in the United States, 14% of adults have noise-induced hearing loss.
Be very aware of the many sources of unwanted noise inflicted on you, daily. This video from Polly St. George is illustrative of the scale of the annoyance. It is harmful to other parts of your body, not just your ears!
