Short Chain Fatty Acid G Protein Coupled Receptors on Mast and Dendritic cells
Microbial metabolites modulate immune functions. PREMIUM CONTENT subscriber access
I wrote in past BioMedWorks newsletters, on the influences of extranasal SCFA olfactory receptors (ORs). They respond to specific diet-derived compounds, gut microbiota metabolites, and oxidative stress. [Gut bacteria break down dietary fiber into short-chain fatty acids.] ORs couple to the G protein alpha subunit, which leads to the activation of adenylyl cyclase 3 and the generation of cyclic adenosine monohosphate followed by the activation of cyclic nucleotide–gated ion channels and a subsequent Ca2+ flux.
As well, my other newsletters describe the many functions of mast cells. Now here I can report on G Protein Coupled SCFA receptors involved in regulating allergic reactions in that intriguing mast cell along with other aspects of the immune response, such as Antigen Presenting Cells.
