Recently, reports of Bill Gates gobbling up prime farmland across the USA, raised questions - why all the sudden interest? Many speculate… perhaps he wants to manipulate the feed market for beef, forcing the purchase of his lab based meats. Maybe he wants to control all the food and collapse the commodities market. Cannot read his mind. But, given his obsession with vaccines, consider the following. Maybe he wants to ‘grow’ his vaccines and related therapeutics?
The plant expression system can rapidly produce mAbs using novel transient expression vectors. Engineering the glycosylation in plants (e.g. tobacco or lettuce) makes mAbs with unique mammalian glycoforms. Plants’ cellular machinery can assemble the multiple subunits of mAbs and perform post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation. And, don’t worry, plants rarely carry human or animal pathogens.
One of the most commercially advanced products is the Zmapp monoclonal antibody (mAb) cocktail produced against the Zaire Ebola virus in 2015.
The zMapp cocktail is credited with saving lives, especially early on in the epidemic, before the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine became available.
Plant Vaccines in Development
Many vaccines are in development and have entered clinical trials. In addition to the traditional method of extraction and purification, some orally stable antigens from genetically modified plants can be put into edible carrier plants such as potatoes, corn, tomatoes, spinach, rice and bananas.
Coronavirus 2019 Vaccine
The Canadian company Medigo and US Kentucky BioProcessing are using tobacco plants to make vaccines against components of SARS-CoV-2.
To make its vaccine, the company starts with tobacco seeds that they plant in a greenhouse. When the plants are approximately 25 days old, they're dipped into a solution containing agrobacteria. These are microorganisms that infect plants. In this case, they've been modified to contain instructions for making a protein from the coronavirus. The plants take up those instructions. Seven days after being exposed to the agrobacteria, "we harvest the plant, go through an extraction and purification process, and at the end of the cycle, we have 99.9 percent pure protein, - Hugh Haydon
The protein is stable at normal refrigerator temperature, maybe even at room temp, so has advantages over the mRNA vaccine being distributed currently.
In the future, instead of your Doctor’s office, you may be getting vaccinated at the local Gates Foundation Farmers Market, when you bite into that juicy tomato.
